Out On The Tiles

Greetings and Salutations to all.

First thing first, I have a nasty backache. It’s my annual week long backache that’s the result of a blast of cold air hitting my backside. Usually happens when we go from a real warm spell to a cool spell. My back seizes up on me and I hurt like a motherfucker for a week. See how grouchy I am?

Congratulations to the Ducks on winning the Stanley Cup. I would of rather seen the Islanders there but alas they were dispatched by the Sabres who then were dispatched themselves by the Senators who last night look liked flat, like my tire ($10 later for a nail removal/patch and new valve stem). See what happens when you’re no longer control by Mickey Mouse – you win the Stanley Cup. Good for you!

I did have the luxury of watching the break-In on ESPN of Curt Schilling’s almost no-hitter. I got one thing to say here. GOOD!! YOU SUCK – YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!! I like baseball and I like a no-hitter, even against the Yankees, but I loathe this individual and to see him derived of pleasure brings me pleasure. Thank You Shannon Stewart!

As I mentioned in my previous blog the Sunday night matchup was the marquee game with A-rod (sans blondie) hit the GW HR in the 9th to beat Boston. Ahhh. Let’s not forget Mr. Wang’s little gem on Wednesday night. Nothing like a 5 hit/1 run complete game to lift a team and rest the BP. You Go Mr. Wang!

Ok, onto music. My Section 5 buddy Rob posted on his blog last week “Your Best Album Ever” to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I have to say I have many favorite albums over several genres of music. Some of my favorites are:

John Coltrane – Blue Train
U2 – Joshua Tree
The Cult – Sonic Temple
Songs From The Big Chair – Tears for Fears
Lay It Down – Cowboy Junkies
Live in NYC – Counting Crowes
Nevermind – Nirvana

And the list goes on and on……

Back in the day I believe on K-ROCK (if it was K-Rock back then) there was a show called “Desert Island Discs” in which people would call/write-in with the 3 albums that they would need if stuck on a deserted island. A great premise with some really interesting choices. I never called/wrote in but always had my 3 ready on the tip of my tongue.

Well my 3 are:

U2 – Joshua Tree
The Cult – Sonic Temple
Songs From The Big Chair – Tears for Fears

I little of this and little of that and I’m happy. Fact: I use to have the cassettes (remember those) to all 3 of these albums in every car I owned till my Ford Escort got stolen and they were gone forever….sniff sniff.

My favorite album: Joshua Tree – simple a masterpiece from the opening sounds of “Where The Streets Have No Name” till the end of the haunting, chilling guitar sounds of “Mothers of the Disappeared” (my favorite U2 song)

Not one back apple in this whole album. I can listen to this album over and over and over and never get sick of it.

2 interesting facts:

- The “actual” Joshua Tree from the album art is sadly to say, dead. You can google it and check it online. The debate from old age to human vandalism rages on.

- A friend’s wife once told me that U2 were “Overrated” and this was before the Joshua Tree was released. I still crack up when I think of that. You go girl!

So there is my choice take it or leave it.

Speaking of my friend Rob again (his blog: Exit 55), I leave him and you all with this:

What is the shortest Interstate in New York State? Give me the name, the #, its other name, location and length.

A fine trivia question, and the answer is a little confusing. The actual correct answer is Interstate 878 (the Nassau Expressway). The signs say NY 878, but it is actually an interstate that just isn't signed. It's just under a mile long and is the shortest interstate in the country.

So that leaves part two of the answer. The shortest signed interstate in New York (and the third shortest in the country) is the Sheridan Expressway, I-895 in da Bronx. It was planned to be much longer but would have cut through the Bronx Zoo and community pressure killed it. It's just over a mile long.

Yeah, I know too much about this stuff. It can be embarrassing.

You and I are very much alike when it comes to a "Best Album Ever" in that there are too many to choose from. Narrowing it down to 5, 10, or 20 is difficult. Of the 800+ CD's on my racks, there are only a few that really hold up from beginning to end. "The Joshua Tree" is one of them, as are "Achtung, Baby", and "All That You Can't Leave Behind". Way to go U2!

Here are a few more that I consider perfect:

Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom
Joe Satriani - The Extremist
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - In Step
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Couldn't Stand the Weather
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part II: Scenes From a Memory
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Yes - Close to the Edge
Living Colour - Vivid
Peter Gabriel - So

I am loving the return of K-Rock! I give them credit because they do play new music (Ozzy, Linkin Park, aand Velvet Revolver to name a few). When it comes to the "catalog" tunes, they throw in a really good assortment. Just go to http://www.yes.com/log/?station=WFNY and check out the variety! New stuff, old stuff, shit that was cool when I was in college, shit that's cool now, shit that's always been cool. Good for you, K-Rock! Don't fuck it up!!!

From the friend whose wife said U2 was "Overrated".

To clarify, this was said at a time when all the teenie-boppers were goo-goo over U2. My wife was expressing disdain in the same way the Liverpool fans did when the Beatles conquered America or Cobain's anguish at his success. Whenever such magnificent talent is unleashed on the masses and it becomes commercialized, there is a sadness there.

My wife has expressed regret over making that statement. She was expressing disgust toward the aforemention teenie-boppers, not U2.

We have written Bono and crew and they have replied in kind. Good bunch of Irish blokes.

But I agree that for a stretch U2 was overrated, and I'm still not as big a fan of "The Joshua Tree" as I am of "Boy" and "War", when they were this cool, almost underground band that had a lot of elements of punk and new wave in them.

I went into about a 15-year stretch where I couldn't listen to them because of the same feelings that your wife expressed.

As for my album picks, it's tough but these are my favorites:

Huey Lewis and the News - Sports
The Eagles - Hotel California
The Beatles - The White Album
Sheryl Crow - The Globe Sessions
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Frank Sinatra - Sinatra at the Sands
Radiohead - OK Computer
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
U2 - Boy
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

That's a quick look and I know I'm missing others.

I love Comments!!

Ok Rob - either seek professional help or get a job at the Department of Transportation.

Tom - those 3 albums by U2 are considered by most their "Masterpieces". I have listen to each one hundreds of times and never get sick of them. I love some of your other choices.

Talos - no harm, no foul, I still love the wife. She's the best and makes a good cup of coffee to boot. It's just a classic line that I will carry with me for a long time to come. Always makes me laugh. Yeah - they're a good bunch of Irish blokes.

Back to Rob - I love all the U2 albums - I think War is just a notch short of being a Masterpiece, I really can't put my finger on it. I could of put another 10-20 albums in my list but the blog post would of gone on and on and on.

Well Happy Friday to all and ROCK OUT WITH YOUR COCK OUT!!!

I will both seek help and a job. Thanks as always for the suggestions.
